No plans for Memorial Day weekend? No worries because there’s plenty to do here locally — from the 40th Annual Santacruzan Festival to the grand re-opening of Koro Koro on Jersey Avenue, find out where to eat and relax this holiday weekend.

What: Adoption Day at Shop Kanibal
When: Friday, May 25 from 5pm to 8pm
Where: 197 Montgomery Street
Start your long weekend by making a new friend or two at JerseyCats’ adoption event at Shop Kanibal. There will be plenty of furry, adoptable kittens all looking for permanent homes.

What: Free Tastings at Hidden Grounds Coffee
When: Saturday, May 26 from 10am to 2pm
Where: 148 First Street
Hidden Grounds Coffee recently launched three new bottled beverages — Rose Chai, Masala Chai, and Creole Style Cold Brew Coffee. If you’ve haven’t tried them yet, Saturday is your chance because they’ll be offering free tastings from the hours of 10am to 2pm.

Koro Koro is back in business. To celebrate its long-awaited reopening, they’ll be handing out free Japanese candy and Koro Koro drawstring bags (while supplies last).

What: Champion’s League Final at Frankie
When: Saturday, May 26 at 2:45pm

Hala Madrid!  Or not.  Head to Frankie to watch the Champion’s League Final as Real Madrid vs. Liverpool. While you’re there, don’t forget to try their new salt and pepper squid.

Where: Jersey City Ballroom at 189 Brunswick (3rd Fl)
From novices to pros, the JC Ballroom’s Saturday Night Dance Social is back for another night of open dance. The social includes a dance class, social dancing time, and wine/snacks. Admission is just $10/pp at the door.

What: 40th Annual Santacruzan & Flores de Mayo Festival
When: Sunday, May 27 from 10am to 8pm
Where: Manila Avenue
Get ready for some delicious Filipino food and entertainment during the 40th Annual Santacruzan & Flores de Mayo Street Festival. The all-day street fest will include numerous vendors selling handicrafts, jewelry, clothing, artwork, toys, and more. There will be two stages for music and a procession down Manila Avenue at 4pm.

What: 4th Annual STX Fil-Am 5K & Manila Avenue Mile Races
When: Sunday, May 27 from 6pm
Where: Street & Manila Avenue
Sunday is the 40th Annual Santacruzan & Flores de Mayo Festival and part of the celebration includes two races in the heart of downtown. There’s a 5K race that starts at 6pm on 2nd Street and Manila and finishes at the Colgate Clock on the waterfront and a Manila Avenue Race, which starts at 7pm and runs from 2nd and Manila to 2nd and Hudson. You can register for either race through end of day Saturday and you can check out the course maps here.

What: 3rd Annual Fleet Week at Liberty State Park
When: Sunday, May 27 from 12pm to 5pm
Where: 1 Audrey Zapp Drive
Join the brave men and women of the U.S. Marines, Coast Guard, and Navy for the 3rd Annual Fleet Week at Liberty State Park. The free family-friendly event will include live music, a helicopter display, and more.

    • Hmm, good question. There’s no mention of a rain cancellation on their website or Facebook page (their FB page was last updated Saturday afternoon), so my guess is that it’s still on for Sunday.
