Van Hook Cheese Outpost Now Open in Hamilton Park

Cheesy goodness is returning to Pavonia Avenue. Van Hook Outpost — Van Hook Cheese’s walk-up sandwich counter — is once again open in Hamilton Park. The sandwich shop briefly opened last fall before closing for the winter season. Now that the weather is warmer, the bite-sized shop is back in business at 232.5 Pavonia Avenue (next to Madame Claude Wine). Van Hook Cheese Outpost is open 11am to 3pm Tuesdays through Fridays and 11am to 4pm on weekends. The menu may change, but you can check out the Jersey Avenue sandwich menu to get an idea of what the cheese gods have in store for you.   (The shop is closed on Mondays).

Corto Backyard Opens Saturday

It took a little longer than expected, but Corto’s backyard will be open for dinner this Saturday evening. To celebrate the occasion, Corto will be roasting a whole 100-pound pig. We advise you make those Saturday evening reservations right now.

New Vegan Cafe Coming to JSQ

Rosa Montesquieu — who once served as Terri New York’s co-owner — is opening a vegan shop at 203 Academy Street near Journal Square, reports Jersey Digs.  The menu will be completely vegan with some South American influences (Montesquieu is of Ecuadorian descent). Sample items include vegan taco/burrito bowls, Banana Walnut Scones, Tofu Scramble Biscuit, and a mix of smoothies, juices, and coffee. The cafe will open later this month.

Amazon Go Opens in Brookfield Place

Amazon Go storefront in New York City

While technically not Jersey City, earlier this week Amazon opened its first “Amazon Go” store in New York at Brookfield Place (near the WTC PATH station). To enter the 1,300 square foot market, you’ll need to install the Amazon Go app (iOS/Android) onto your phone. You then scan your phone/app at a turnstile near the entrance, and Amazon’s scanners and sensors track your movements inside the store. If you pick something up, it’s added to your “digital cart.” If you place it back, it’s taken off your digital cart. When you’re done, just walk out with your purchases and Amazon will auto-magically charge your Amazon account.
