Law Banning Chain Stores May Be Repealed

Mayor Fulop will ask the city council to repeal a law — that he asked them to pass in 2015 — restricting chain stores in downtown Jersey City. The current law bans chain stores from taking up more than 30 percent of ground-floor commercial space in downtown redevelopment zones. (Parts of the waterfront are exempt as well as properties owned by LeFrak and Mack-Cali). This comes on the heels of a lawsuit by developer Alfonso Carrino. In his lawsuit, Carrino — who owns 8 Erie Street — argues the chain store ban has kept national corporate businesses from opening in his retail spaces. —NJ.com
