The Boil dining room

The Boil has officially opened in Jersey City. Located at 8 Erie Street (in the space formerly occupied by DoShe), the Cajun-inspired restaurant specializes in New Orleans cuisine, with a heavy emphasis on seafood.

Jersey City Upfront was invited to a preview night and here’s what you need to know before you go. First things first — The Boil is cash only. (Just like its New York locations). There’s an ATM toward the back of the restaurant, but if you don’t want to pay any fees, you should make a quick trip to your bank before you arrive for dinner.

The Boil Jersey City Menu

The Boil is a Louisiana-style seafood spot serving up raw, fried, and boiled seafood. The menu is divided into sections that cover appetizers, raw bar, sides, and main entrees. Appetizers run the gamut from lobster rolls and soft shell crab to a catfish basket and Cajun fries.

Main entrees consist of shellfish, which you order a la carte/by the pound. You pick the sauce you like along with the spice level and the food arrives in a steaming plastic bag. Alternatively, you can opt for a combo. For instance, you can do a 1lb. King Crab & 1lb. Crawfish Combo ($58) or a 1lb. Crawfish & 1lb. Shrimp Combo ($32). Paired with an appetizer and a side, one combo should be more than enough for two people.

Drinks are reasonably priced. There’s a full bar with beers on tap for $7, bottles at $6, and cocktails between $10 to $13. Wine bottles are also in the $30 range.

The Boil King Crab

The Jersey City location will offer a few exclusives not found in The Boil’s New York outposts. One of them is called The Whale — an over-sized seafood bucket that features giant lobster, king crab legs, and jumbo shrimp.

In the spring, the 120-seat restaurant will open its atrium for al fresco dining. (If you recall, Bell + Gray used the courtyard, but DoShe never really marketed the outdoor space).

The Boil’s chef and co-owner Mike Khuu tells Jersey City Upfront that downtown was the perfect location because many of The Boil’s guests at their two New York locations were Jersey City and Hoboken residents. So Jersey City was a natural expansion.

The Boil will also have some special cocktails for Mardi Gras beginning the week of Monday, February 24.
