Get ready for the opening of yet another taqueria.
New signage at 228 Newark Avenue indicates that Taqueria Mexico City is coming to the corner of Coles and Newark Avenue. The space was formerly the home of Goody Chinese & Spanish Restaurant, which has been closed for some months now.
Not much info is available about the new taqueria, but from the looks of it I wouldn’t expect it to be a trendy foie gras taco kind of spot. Instead I picture it being more of a no-frills spot like the former Sol Azteca.
Taqueria Mexico City is just one of many new Mexican restaurants coming to Jersey City. Just a few weeks ago Mezcal Kitchen opened near Five Corners and Tacoria will open this spring near Torico’s.
And Tacoria, the growing Chipotle-inspired taco chain, is setting up a location somewhere around Erie and First. On top of the “original” Taqueria Downtown, Taqueria Downtown Catering, and Taqueria Viva. And that’s just downtown.
Is it that hard to come up with an original name for a taco place that doesn’t use the word “Taqueria”?
i’d be more concerned about whether the tacos at the taco place (or taqueria or tacoria or takorea) are good or not, rather nitpick about the name. or just open or pitch your own taco joint if your naming skills are so amazing.
