Katyn Memorial Moving to York Street

City officials released details Monday of the Katyn Memorial’s new home.

The statue will be moved a few feet away from its current spot at Exchage Place to a new location along the waterfront on York Street.

Details were released after a tense week of heated discussions between the mayor, city council members, and local residents.

Mayor Steven Fulop announced that Exchange Place will be “renovated into a huge green open space with a children’s area. The area will be outfitted for stages and kiosks so that it becomes a destination. The cost will be covered by placing a surcharge on the developers in the area and no tax dollars will be spent. York Street will also be renovated via a joint effort from Jersey City and the Polish Government. It will be designed as pictured into a more appropriate place to reflect on the Katyn Massacre as opposed to Exchange Place.”

The statue will be moved later this summer when work begins on the new park at Exchange Place.
