Coronavirus deaths continue to rise in Jersey City; Rutgers rolls out COVID-19 saliva tests

1: The city has not thoroughly updated its COVID-19 stats page, so confirmed coronavirus cases in Jersey City remain at 2,817. However, as of April 15 there are now 156 COVID-19-related deaths in Jersey City (up from 137). —COVID-19 JC Stats

2: City officials have provided free COVID-19 tests to residents of the Alaris Health nursing home at Hamilton Park. The nursing home’s staff allege that Alaris Health created an unsafe environment for both staff and residents by withholding information about sick residents. Test results are expected in a few days. —NJ.com

3: New Jersey currently has 71,030 positive COVID-19 cases (up from 68,824) with 3,156 deaths (up from 2,805). —NJ Dept. of Health

4: Middlesex county is using a new FDA-approved saliva-based coronavirus test developed by Rutgers University. The test provides results within 48 hours. “Saliva testing will help with the global shortage of swabs for sampling and increase testing of patients, and it will not require health care professionals to be put at risk to collect samples,” said Andrew Brooks, chief operating officer and director of technology development at RUCDR. —Rutgers Today

Where can you get coronavirus testing in Jersey City?
  • Jersey City has two coronavirus testing facilities open 7 days a week from 9am to 5pm.
  • You must call (201) 547-5535 to make an appointment.
  • A walk-up center is located at the JC Fire Headquarters at 465 Marin Boulevard.
  • A drive-thru testing facility is located at 575 Route 440.
  • Grocery store workers and health care workers will be tested first.
