T-Mobile and AT&T service now available in NY PATH stations.

The days of standing by the stairway in the hopes of getting a faint cellphone signal will soon be over.

The Port Authority just announced that all New York City PATH stations are now offering cellular service from AT&T and T-Mobile. Cellular connectivity is available not just on PATH platforms, but throughout underground stations as well. (I’m on Verizon. Has anyone tried it successfully?)

“We continually strive for a better customer experience for all of our PATH riders,” said Port Authority Board Chairman Kevin O’Toole via a press release. “Adding another critical service in the form of expanded cell access is an essential part of meeting that goal.”

Across the Hudson, New York’s MTA finished blanketing its much larger network of subway stations with cellular and Wi-Fi service last year. So while the PA’s announcement is welcome news, it’s not too much to brag about.

The New York PATH stations with cellular coverage include 33rd, 23rd, 14th, 9th, and Christopher streets. World Trade Center has had cellular coverage since it opened in 2016. Meanwhile, in New Jersey, the underground stations that will get cellular service are Hoboken, Exchange Place, Newport, and Grove.

Verizon and Sprint customers can expect to see system-wide service in both New York and New Jersey’s underground PATH stations by early 2019.

The PA has also started testing countdown clocks at PATH stations that will inform passengers when the next train will arrive.
