Bread and Salt Jersey City

Jersey City’s ever-changing pizza scene is now stronger than ever. Bread and Salt, a new neighborhood restaurant by 2016 James Beard semifinalist Rick Easton, just opened in the Heights at 435 Palisade Avenue.

The Pittsburgh-born baker and cook specializes in Roman-style pizza, which is thick and  crunchy, but also airy and light. Pizza at Bread and Salt is sold by the slice or as pies.

Easton originally opened Bread and Salt in Pittsburgh, PA. The New York Times called his pizzas a “slice of heaven in Pittsburgh.” Upon leaving Pittsburgh, Easton opened a temporary pizza pop-up at Berg’n in Brooklyn.

The Brooklyn pop-up eventually closed and now — along with business partner Marc Magliozzi (Dozzino, Corto) — Easton has opened a permanent Bread and Salt here in Jersey City Heights.

The restaurant accommodates about 25 people and is currently self service. You order at the counter, pay, and then pick up your pizza. The eatery, which was formerly Pizza Vita, is also BYOB. (We recommend walking up to Riverview Wine for a natural bottle of vino you can pair with your dinner). The menu currently includes margarita pizza, potato pizza, mushroom pizza, and a rotating list of sandwiches. Easton is a bread perfectionist, so be ready to get some out-of-this-world bread with every dish.

Bread and Salt is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 5pm to 10pm as well as on weekends. It’s the latest eatery to open in the Heights, alongside The Franklin, Cocoa Bakery, and Central Bistro.
