Tropical Storm Isaias will barrel its way through Jersey City this afternoon. Isaias will arrive in our area packing winds of up to 55mph with gusts of up to 70mph, per the National Weather Service. Governor Phil Murphy has declared a state of emergency and is urging residents to stay home and avoid venturing out if possible.
What’s expected
- The National Weather Service has issued a tornado threat for the area (10% chance)
- Tropical Storm warning (PDF) for Tuesday with the heaviest winds and rain from 10am to 10pm.
- 2″ to 4″ of rain is expected with possible flooding.
- Power outages are expected due to downed trees and tree limbs.
Preparations
Per Mayor Steven Fulop/Twittter, “the city has deployed barricades to over 30 locations citywide to divert traffic around identified flood prone areas, and crews are out cleaning catch basins to maintain proper drainage citywide. We have also deployed City employees to work with restaurant and business owners to remove or properly secure any outdoor items that can exacerbate hazardous conditions during strong winds and flash flooding.” Also, alternate side of the street parking is suspended.
