Tribos Peri Peri in Jersey City

Tribos Peri Peri — a Portuguese restaurant based in Saddle Brook, New Jersey — is coming to 109 Columbus Drive. The new restaurant is taking over the space formerly occupied by ME Casa.

Tribos isn’t your typical Portuguese eatery. The restaurant specializes in food made with African bird’s eye chili (piri piri or peri peri). The spicy chili originates from Angola and Mozambique, both former Portuguese colonies. The chili is utilized in sauces used to marinate meat, lamb, and chicken. The peri peri style of cooking eventually made its way to Portugal where it became a popular dish among locals.

That doesn’t mean every dish at Tribos will make you break out in a sweat. Diners can choose what level of spiciness they want. The menu at the Saddle Brook restaurant offers everything from Peri chicken breasts to Peri lamb chops. Diners can also get pitas, wraps, burgers, and falafel. (All of the meats offered at Tribos are Halal).

Tribos also offers a handful of veggie only dishes. This includes a veggie burger, veggie pita, and paneer wrap. As far as pricing goes, most dishes are comfortably under $20.

As for ME Casa, it’s not know whether the restaurant will relocate to a new spot or focus solely on its ME Casa Express food truck. The Puerto Rican eatery had just moved from its former spot at 356 Varick to its new location on Columbus Drive back in June of 2018. (ME Casa’s old storefront is now home to Ghost Truck Kitchen).

Tribos Peri Peri is expected to open within a month’s time. You can follow their progress via their Instagram account.
