Jersey City Reservoir 3 is about to get a major makeover. Mayor Steve Fulop recently announced a $6 million restoration project for the 13-acre park. The project, which will take a year to complete, is the city’s biggest park investment since Berry Lane Park.

As part of the project, Jersey City Reservoir 3 will get landscaped open spaces and a walking trail with access to the waterfront. The reservoir will also get better lighting and safety measures. The project is being funded by four separate grants. The city will match the $3 million in combined grants for the project.

“This project will create another special place for Jersey City residents,” said Mayor Fulop. “This project has been in discussion for nearly 30 years with residents recognizing the potential but nobody acting on it, and I’m glad we are able to move this forward. It will be an amazing addition to Jersey City.”

Located at the intersection of Pershing Plaza/Howie Fink Way and Summit Avenue, Jersey City Reservoir 3 was built in the 1870s. It supplied drinking water to Jersey City until the 1990s, when it was shut down. In 2005, the non-profit Jersey City Reservoir Preservation Alliance was formally incorporated offering tours and other recreational programming at the reservoir.

“With these enhancements, Reservoir 3 can return to its glory to provide pristine open space for people from around the region, further putting Jersey City on the map as a destination for some of New Jersey’s greatest parks,” said Ward D Councilman Yousef Saleh.
