McGinley Square has become one of the most exciting JC neighborhoods for dining. In addition to their weekend Pedestrian Plaza Pop-Ups, the area is also home to newcomers like ITA Kitchen and Champs Chicken & Waffles. What’s even cooler is that the neighborhood eateries are as diverse as Jersey City itself. The latest restaurant to open in McGinley Square is Alex Sazon — a new Dominican restaurant offering some of the best cheap eats you’ll find in Jersey City.
Alex Sazon has taken over the space formerly occupied by El Cocotero at 749 Bergen Avenue. They’re open 7 days a week offering a mix of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and combo platters. Excluding the combos (which are meant for sharing), nothing on the menu is priced over $20. Not only that, but the portions are very generous (as is typical with most Latin restaurants).
Dominican breakfasts tend to be on the hearty side and Alex Sazon offers plenty of heavy hitters like mangu (mashed plantain), yucca frita (fried yucca), and yautía (root vegetable) with cheese, salami, and eggs.
Their mofongo dishes (fried/mashed plantain) are comfort food at its best and come with your choice of shrimp, cheese, fried pork, steak, octopus, or chicharrón. Other specials include pernil, pork tail, pork ears, and chivo (goat). And of course you can’t have a Dominican restaurant without mangu, which is also on the menu as part of their breakfast entrees.
You can follow Alex Sazon on Instagram for the latest updates. They’re also available on Seamless for delivery.
