From Bareburger to Shake Shack, there have been a lot of openings in Jersey City these past few days. One opening you may have missed is the debut of 143 Social. The new speakeasy is nestled inside Bareburger’s basement at 143 Newark Avenue.
143 Social offers 10 signature cocktails with simple names like “Number 1” and “Number 2.” But there’s nothing simple about these drinks. They’re well-balanced cocktails made with ingredients like jasmine-infused Ketel One and snap pea-infused Fords gin. I particularly liked the Number 5, made with Lunazul tequila, Thai chili agave, midori, ginger, lime, and avocado cilantro oil. There’s also a selection of “low ABV” and “no ABV” mocktails alongside wines (bottles and by the glass) and a small beer selection.
If the munchies hit, 143 Social also offers a small selection of food that includes grilled pork belly, jerk lamb dumplings, and squid ink linguini. Staff are friendly and accommodating and although I didn’t get to try many cocktails on my first visit, their Number 5 and their negroni were on point.
