Weekend WTC PATH service is back. The Port Authority recently announced that work on the tunnels connecting Exchange Place to the World Trade Center has finished six months ahead of schedule.

At the start of 2019, the PA announced that it would close the WTC PATH station on weekends in order to make Superstorm Sandy-related repairs to its tunnels. The closures forced commuters to take the 33rd Street line or opt for the NY Waterway to Battery Park.

However, the agency reports that it was able to expedite repairs by modifying its construction schedule and maximizing its workforce. The project included replacing PATH tracks in the tunnels below the Hudson River.

“We are pleased we could shorten the period of time that weekend closures were in effect,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton via press release. “We ask PATH riders for their patience too often. Now for those trying to use the World Trade Center station on weekends, the wait is over.”

The PA is also urging riders to wear face masks while in subway cars and stations. The agency says it’s disinfecting high-touch areas of its stations and platforms three times a day. Workers will disinfect PATH trains every 24 hours and clean them every 72 hours or less.
