Wear a mask or get slapped with a $50 fine. That’s the message the Port Authority is sending to commuters with its latest announcement.
Starting on Monday, November 2, anyone who fails to “wear a mask or face covering appropriately in Port Authority facilities” will be fined $50. This includes PATH trains/stations, airport terminals, AirTrain stations/trains, the Port Authority Bus Terminal, the GWB bus station, and the Oculus transportation hub.

The entire country is undergoing a resurgence of COVID-19 infections and the tri-state area is unfortunately part of the mix. The PA hopes that its new mask mandate will help protect fellow commuters and PA employees from potentially spreading COVID-19. The bi-state agency is following in the footsteps of New York’s MTA. Last month, the MTA announced it would hand out $50 fines to all unmasked straphangers.
We haven’t been riding the PATH trains much, but earlier this week we ventured into lower Manhattan via the PATH. In our informal/unscientific poll, we noticed about 85% of commuters properly wearing masks. The other 15% were either wearing chinguards or not bothering with a mask whatsoever.
