It turns out that Talde and Piggyback Bar aren’t the only downtown restaurants closing this year. Nearly six years after opening, Third & Vine announced it will permanently close this weekend. The announcement was made on its social media accounts.
The neighborhood cocktail bar first opened its doors in February of 2014. At the time, Third & Vine was owned and operated by Jamie Mayne and Brian Rothbart with a focus on cheese and wine. On your typical weeknight, Mayne had 35+ different cheeses from around the world to offer customers. Meanwhile, Rothbart had created a seasonal cocktail program that was complimented by unique wine offerings.
Behind the kitchen, chef Lynn Wheeler — a veteran of New York’s Waverly Inn — was serving up shareable, tapas-style plates that ranged from a lobster mac-and-cheese to a decadent blue cheese creme brulee. Two years after opening, BuzzFeed called Third & Vine New Jersey’s best wine bar.
However, in January of 2018, Third & Vine changed management and the new owners introduced larger plates, special events/tastings, and added an outdoor seating area for the warmer months. Unfortunately, Third & Vine didn’t enjoy a long run under new management.
At a time when many business were focusing on Grove street, Third & Vine decided to set up shop on a quiet corner of the Village. Along with nearby Madame Claude Cafe (now Madame Claude Bis), it was one of the first true neighborhood hangouts. We thank them for their years of bringing excellent cheese, wine, and cocktails to the Village.
How sad. A wonderful place…. at least with the original owners.
Agree! I’d always discover a new cheese or wine with every visit. Still miss that blue cheese creme brûlée.
