Sushi by Bou is officially open to the public. David Bouhadana’s timed omakase dinners can now be enjoyed inside the speakeasy at Ani Ramen Jersey City.
Sushi by Bou has been described as a fast and affordable way to enjoy omakase. Omakase is a form of Japanese dining wherein guests allow the chef to choose their meal. In exchange, diners are treated to a seasonal, artistic meal using the freshest ingredients possible.
The Jersey City venue is open inside Ani Ramen’s speakeasy area (where Luigi’s Ice Cream used to be) at 218 Newark Avenue. Sushi by Bou Jersey City features an 8-seat sushi/chef’s counter, a pop-up cocktail bar, and a small waiting area with couches. Reservations can be made via Yelp Reservations.
The venue has no waiters and no tables. Instead, you pay $50 for a 12-piece omakase experience eaten at a chef’s counter. The catch — you must finish your meal in 60 minutes so that the next group of diners can come in.
The timed omakase experience isn’t entirely new. However, Bouhadana has perfected the experience for diners. Originally from Boca Raton, FL, Bouhadana earned his stripes working at various sushi restaurants both in New York and several years in Japan.
Sushi By Bou Menu and Locations
Currently, Bouhadana has locations throughout New York City. There are spots at the Nomad Hotel 3232, Time Square Sanctuary Hotel, and Union Square Zeckendorf Towers. There are also locations in Brooklyn and Miami.
The menu, sourced locally when possible, consists of yellowtail, salmon, eel, sea urchin, scallop, and everything else you’d find in a typical sushi restaurant. Diners can also indulge in signature cocktails with names like the Yuzu Honey Bee and Shiso Southsider. The venue inside Ani Ramen will also include sake, signature cocktails, Japanese beers, and whiskies.
Jersey City Upfront attended a media preview at Ani Ramen and we can confirm that the Sushi by Bou Jersey City menu is the same as the menu posted on their website.
Ani Ramen Speakeasy
This is the second major collaboration at Ani Ramen. Last October, the restaurant announced an ice cream speakeasy in partnership with New Jersey’s Luigi’s Ice Cream. The new partnership brings an omakase experience to the already popular (and ever growing) ramen house.
In the coming months, Ani Ramen will open restaurants at the Munchies Food Hall at American Dream, East Rutherford, NJ; Cranford, NJ; and Newark, NJ. All locations will open between 2019 and 2020.
The Sushi by Bou concept is presented by Simple Venue. The hospitality group finds underutilized spaces and transforms them into “micro restaurants.” Currently, they’re promoting a giveaway for a complimentary omakase dinner for four once the venue opens.
