We hope you have room for more tacos. After what felt like an epic wait, Sol Azteca has finally opened at 328 Montgomery (between Varick and Monmouth) in downtown Jersey City.
Yes, Jersey City has a long list of Mexican restaurants, but if you’re looking for something more affordable than Orale and quieter than Taqueria, Sol Azteca is sure to hit the spot.
The BYOB restaurant quietly opened last week in the space that was originally intended for Hard Grove. (That is, before Hard Grove opened in their current location on First Street).
Sol Azteca is operated by the same family behind Tacos Victoria. Sol Azteca briefly opened at 239 Barrow (on the corner of Bright Street). However, their new spot is a larger and much nicer version of their former restaurant. In fact, we think it offers the most comfy atmosphere of their network of restaurants. The dimly lit room has a long bar counter and plenty of exposed brick walls.
In terms of food, their menu consists of Mexican street food offering items like tacos, huaraches, quesadillas, burritos, and flautas. Everything is generally priced under $20.
We recently tried their veggie echiladas, three corn tortillas dipping in red sauce and served with grilled veggies and cheese. You also get a complimentary basket of nachos. Our meal was good and hard to beat (for downtown prices at least) at just $10.
Sol Azteca is open 7 days a week. They will launch delivery service in the coming days.
