City officials recently broke ground on SciTech Scity — a $300 million project that will turn Jersey City into a leading destination for STEM education and innovation. SciTech City will be a “mini-city” within Jersey City consisting of tech entrepreneurs, scientists, and students. The campus seeks to attract the best STEM students in the nation.
Mayor Steven Fulop, Governor Phil Murphy, Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise, and Liberty Science Center President and CEO Paul Hoffman were present at the ceremonial ground breaking on October 22.

“We’re in the midst of an incredible transformation as we further establish Jersey City as the sought-after destination for STEM education and innovation attracting world-class companies, jobs, investment, and countless other opportunities,” said Mayor Fulop. “I’m incredibly proud to be a part of this groundbreaking moment.”
Phase one of SciTech Scity is scheduled to open in late 2023 and 2024, following the completion of $300 million in new construction on 12.5 acres of land donated by the City of Jersey City. The initial phase includes:
Liberty Science Center High School: A world-class STEM academy that will be operated by the Hudson County Schools of Technology and provide programs in Earth (Sustainable Engineering and Climate Science), Life (Biological Sciences), and Space (Astrophysics) to 400 students in grades 9 through 12 from across Hudson County. LSC will arrange for the students to have intensive mentorships and work experiences with the companies and scientists at Edge Works and at LSC itself. LSC will also create preparatory programs for middle-school students from under-served communities in Jersey City and Hudson County who are passionate about science and aspire to attend the new high school.
Edge Works: This area will consist of two hubs: The Works and The Co-Creation Center. The Works will have a fabrication lab, research and development spaces, offices, and co-working areas for start-ups and entrepreneurs. The Co-Creation Center will be a state-of-the-art conference center and tech exhibition gallery.
Scholars Village: The village will include residential housing for scientists, entrepreneurs, STEM graduate students, and individuals/families who desire to be a part of the SciTech Scity community.
Public Commons: This five-acre outdoor park will have space for concerts, farmers markets, art exhibitions, and food-truck festivals.
