One of Newark Avenue’s longest running restaurants, Sawadee, appears to have closed.
The restaurant has been closed for days and phone calls to the establishment have not been returned. Sawadee’s menu has also been “permanently removed” from the likes of Seamless and Delivery.com. They’re the latest business, alongside Downtown Hardware, to close its doors.
Located at 137 Newark Avenue, Sawadee has been a go-to spot for Jersey City residents since it first opened in the summer of 2008. The restaurant served a mix of Thai and Chinese food.
Sawadee was one of the few Pedestrian Mall restaurants whose entire menu was priced comfortably under $20. Portions were generous given their price and Sawadee was good at being consistent month-over-month. The restaurant also had a killer happy hour that lasted from 11:30am till 7pm with $4 appetizers and half-priced drinks.
It’s not clear why Sawadee closed, but sadly they’re not the only downtown eatery that we’ve lost. This past year alone, Talde, Dolya, Piggyback Bar, Third & Vine, and most recently, FM Jersey City have closed or announced they are closing. It remains to be seen who will take up the space.
