Contactless free payment options are coming to more PATH stations. Last week, the Port Authority announced that it was expanding its TAPP pilot program to more PATH stations. TAPP turnstiles can now be found at the WTC, 33rd Street, Journal Square, Newark, Hoboken, and Harrison stations. According to the Port Authority, these six stations are the system’s busiest and accounted for 67% of total ridership in 2023.
Short for Total Access PATH Payment, TAPP is an open-loop contactless payment system, which allows customers to use contactless credit/debit cards or their digital wallets at PATH turnstiles. The WTC station, which is the PATH’s busiest station, has the highest number of TAPP turnstiles topping out at 12. According to the Port Authority, commuters have TAPPed more than 1 million times since the system’s introduction in December.
During this extended roll out, SmartLink and MetroCard support will remain operational as customers become familiar with the new system. TAPP turnstiles will be found in all stations by end of 2024.
