City officials are contemplating shutting down the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Mall. The reason? Rowdy drunks.
Residents who live on Newark Avenue are complaining of the noise and fights that break out on weekends after bars do their last calls for the night. Now officials are faced with a handful of choices: hire an off-duty cop and have local businesses pick up the tab (police officials say on-duty cops cannot be spared), close down the plaza completely, or put a curfew in place.
Before we forget, Hoboken’s 1 Republik is expected to open a beer hall in the former Rainbow space, which could complicate matters even more for local residents. —NJ.com
