Path train at WTCPATH commuters will soon be able to pay for fares using a tap-and-go payment system similar to New York’s OMNY. The new system will let riders pay for fares using mobile devices or any contactless credit/debit cards, said Port Authority officials.

“PATH is continually searching for innovative ways to enhance the travel experience for all of our riders,” said PATH General Manager/Director Clarelle DeGraffe. “With this new system, we’ll be adopting the most current and effective technology to advance that goal and make for a more seamless experience at the turnstile.”

The Port Authority is expected to tap Cubic Transportation Systems to complete the design and installation of the new contactless payment system. (Cubic operates the MTA’s OMNY system in New York). The total cost will be $99.4 million. The new system is scheduled to begin a pilot phase at select stations by the middle of 2023 with a full roll out by the second half of 2023.

The new fare payment system will also create a new PATH fare card, similar to the current SmartLink card, for passengers who wish to use that method of payment.
