Wear a mask or risk getting fined

NJ Face MasksWearing face masks saves lives. That’s the message New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is sending out to all residents. On Wednesday, Governor Murphy signed an executive order requiring that all New Jersey residents don a face mask when out in public and social distancing isn’t possible.

“The hotspots we’re seeing across the nation and certain worrisome transmission trends in New Jersey require us to do more,” said Governor Murphy. “In the absence of a national strategy on face coverings, we’re taking this step to ensure that we can continue on our road back as one New Jersey family.”

There are a few exceptions to the rule:

  • Situations when wearing a face mask would inhibit an individual’s health.
  • During high intensity aerobic or anaerobic activities.
  • While swimming.
  • When in close proximity of family members, household partners, or caretakers.
  • While eating/drinking outdoors.

New Jersey residents have been wearing face masks inside stores, when entering restaurants, and while using public transportation since April. The new executive order extends mask wearing to outdoor settings. The executive order comes as the United States surpasses 3 million confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Local law enforcement will monitor compliance, reports NBC News. Although it’s not clear how much violators could be fined.

Face mask signs installed throughout Jersey City

Last week, officials in Jersey City began installing signs reminding residents that face masks are required in certain areas of the city. Signs can be found all throughout popular public spots like the Jersey City Pedestrian Plaza.

Since the start of the month, coronavirus Jersey City cases have slightly increased. In June, numbers dipped as low as 4 new coronavirus cases (7-day average), whereas our 7-day average now stands at 12.
