NJ indoor dining capacity will increase from 35% to 50% this Friday, March 19. Governor Phil Murphy made the joint announcement with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo who is also increasing restaurant capacity limits in New York City to 50%. Governor Murphy last increased NJ indoor dining on February 5.
“When our restaurant capacity last changed, our hospitals were treating just under 2,900 patients,” said Governor Murphy at yesterday’s briefing. “That number has come down by about 1,000 and it’s been consistent since then. We believe that when all factors are weighed, we can make this expansion without leading to undue further stress on our healthcare system.”
In addition to restaurants, Governor Murphy also announced that other New Jersey businesses will be permitted to increase their max capacity to 50%. They include:
- Indoor recreational and amusement businesses
- Gyms and fitness clubs
- Barber shops, salons, and other personal care businesses
Meanwhile, indoor gatherings that are not religious services/ceremonies, political events, weddings, funerals, memorial services or performances will now be capped at 25 individuals (up from 10). Similarly, outdoor gatherings that are not religious services/ceremonies, political events, weddings, funerals, or memorial services will be capped at 50 (up from 25).
“I’m encouraging everyone in the strongest possible terms to engage in social activities outside whenever possible,” said Governor Murphy. “We know this virus is many times more transmissible and lethal indoors than outdoors and I applaud every restaurant that have undertaken creative efforts to facilitate outdoor dining, and I look forward to seeing outdoor dining reemerge in full force this spring.”
Governor Murphy also urged residents to continue social distancing, wearing masks, and getting vaccinated when as soon as possible.
Jersey City indoor dining curfew has been lifted
NJ indoor dining restrictions are being lifted a week before hospitality workers will be allowed to receive the COVID-19 vaccine here in Jersey City. Yesterday’s announcement also comes about a month after Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop ended the 10pm restaurant/bar curfew in Jersey City.
“Based on guidance provided by Governor Murphy and the State of New Jersey, we have made the joint decision to allow bars and restaurants to operate during normal, regular business hours without a local curfew,” said Fulop back in early February.
“Our public safety officers and City staff will be aggressively monitoring all bars and restaurants during overnight hours to ensure COVID-19 safety precautions are being taken at all times. If not followed, any bar or restaurant will be subject to immediate penalties, including but not limited to closure.”
