The New York Road Runners (NYRR) is coming to Jersey City.
The organizers of the world famous TCS New York City Marathon are hosting their first race in New Jersey — the Newport Fiesta 5K. The 3.1-mile race will be held on Saturday, May 4th.
“Our growth into New Jersey provides the opportunity for New York Road Runners to reach the thousands of dedicated runners who regularly participate in our premier races as well as reach new and diverse audiences,” said Michael Capiraso, president and CEO of New York Road Runners.
The race will start and finish on Washington Street. It’ll cut through parts of downtown, Jersey Avenue, Columbus Drive, and the waterfront.
“A 5K race is a race that anyone can run,” said Mayor Steven Fulop. “Not only will the city host the Newport Fiesta 5K, but NYRR will bring year-round initiatives and races to the city that are of no cost for residents.”
In conjunction with the LeFrak Organization, the NYRR will provide the community with health and fitness activities. In April, the organization will launch NYRR Open Run at Lincoln Park — the first Open Run outside of New York. These weekly runs will be directed by volunteers and will be free to participants.
In addition, the NYRR will adopt the annual Newport 10K (no word yet about the Newport Half).
Registration for the Newport Fiesta 5K is now open to runners of all levels. It will be followed by a post-race cinco de mayo festival.
