Move over, Oculus. Penn Station is about to get a massive makeover.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently unveiled plans to turn Penn Station into a new transportation hub dubbed the Pennsylvania Station-Farley Complex. (RIP Empire Station Complex).

As part of the new plan, the James A. Farley Post Office — located across the street from Penn Station — will be turned into a 255,000-square-foot complex called the Moynihan Train Hall. It will be larger than Grand Central, 50% bigger than the current Penn Station, and accommodate both Amtrak and Long Island Rail Road passengers. It will also include an extra 700,000 square feet of high-end retail space.

As part of the plan, the MTA will redesign its 34th street subway stations for the A, C, E, 1, 2, and 3 lines to the tune of $50 million. It will spend another $170 million on construction of a new LIRR corridor in Penn Station.

The Train Hall alone will cost approximately $1.6 billion. Funding will come from the developers, MTA, Amtrak, LIRR, the Port Authority, and the federal government. No word on what role NJ Transit will play in all of this.

Construction will start as early as this fall and the project is expected to wrap up by ::drumroll:: 2020! —Curbed, Politico NJ
