Maman Cafe is opening its first Jersey City location on Valentine’s Day. The French bakery will open from 7:30am till 6pm at 70 Hudson Street.
On opening day, Maman Jersey City will host a “Pay As You Please” promotion with 100% of the proceeds benefiting Welcome Baby, an organization that provides low-income mothers with a comprehensive package containing everything she and her newborn need.
Maman, which means “mother” in French, first debuted in New York in 2014 when husband and wife team Benjamin Sormonte and Elisa Marshall opened in SoHo. They now have nine cafes throughout the city, plus two additional cafes in Canada. Their latest cafe opened earlier this month at Rockefeller Center.

Although each cafe has its own unique flair, the concept and menu at all locations is inspired by the South of France. That means diners will be treated to everything from a ratatouille hash to a truffle croque “maman.” The menu at Maman also consists of pastries, coffee, tea, and cookies. Back in 2017, Maman’s nutty chocolate chip cookie was named one of Oprah’s Favorite Things. (The recipe can be found in Maman’s new cookbook and has been printed online via Vogue).
Maman Je t’aime Jersey City Pop-Up
Prior to its soft opening, Maman held two consecutive weekend pop-ups. The first pop-up took place Friday (February 4). The limited time pastries and drinks that were offered included:
Pop-Up Pastries
- Cupid’s Arrow Apple Pear Danish (vegan): with caramel croissant dough and apple pear compote infused with vanilla, lemongrass, and star anise ($5)
- White Chocolate Raspberry Rose Cookie: ($4.50)
- You’re Berry Sweet Strawberry Vanilla Cruffin: homemade strawberry jam and vanilla frosting nestled in crunchy brioche, topped with a heart ($5.50)
- Je t’aime Cookie Sandwich: passion fruit ganache, white chocolate and toasted coconut ($5.50)
- Cookie Bouquet: a bouquet of 8 maman cookies with gift packaging ($48)
Pop-Up Drinks
- Cherry on Top: homemade dark chocolate cherry ganache, fresh whipped cream, brownie crumbs, morello cherry sauce, and topped with a homemade chocolate covered cherry candy ($8.5)
- Blue Velvet: a white chocolate ganache with butterfly pea flower tea, chamomile infused whipped cream, blue velvet cake crumbles and an edible butterfly sleeping on top ($8.5)
- Be My Clementine: winter citrus dark chocolate ganache, creamsicle whipped cream, flourless clementine cake crumbs, topped with a clementine chocolate heart ($8.5)
