The end of an era

Madame Claude Bis signAlice Troietto and Mattias Gustafsson — the local duo behind neighborhood restaurant Madame Claude Bis — will be stepping away from the restaurant. The owners announced via their Instagram account that their last day at Madame Claude Bis will be on Thursday, July 14. The restaurant will continue under new ownership.

“It is time for us to announce our last day July 14, 2022,” reads the announcement. “Thanks to all our great and always supportive guests, who challenged us to make the best of ourselves, and allowing us to share our cuisine and our passion for food.”

Madame Claude Cafe first opened on 4th Street and Brunswick in 2002. The intimate BYOB eatery quickly made a name for itself thanks to its tasty French dishes and owners Troietto and Gustafsson, who’d oftentimes sit outside their restaurant greeting passersby with a smile.

Like most restaurants, Madame Claude Bis shuttered during most of the pandemic. When Covid numbers decreased, they managed to reopen with limited tables inside White Eagle Hall. After Covid restrictions eased down, Madame Claude Bis reopened for full service.

While we wish the new owners of Madame Claude Bis the very best, we’ll sorely miss Troietto and Gustafsson. Thank you for taking the risk to open a French restaurant in the Village and helping to transform the neighborhood into what it is today.
