New Jersey’s state parks will reopen Saturday, May 2. Governor Phil Murphy signed an executive order allowing state parks, county parks, and golf courses to reopen. Here in Jersey City, that means Liberty State Park and Liberty Landing Marina will both reopen this weekend.
“We understand that New Jerseyans want to get outside and get some fresh air as the weather warms up,” said Gov. Murphy via press release. “However, this should not serve as an open invitation to rush back to normalcy and break the necessary social distancing measures we’ve put in place.
Weather forecasts indicate it could hit close to 70 this weekend. However, before rushing to the park, there are a few rules that visitors must follow:
- All parks will have parking capped at 50% of capacity.
- Public spaces (playgrounds, visitor centers, and restrooms) will remain closed.
- Picnics, organized activities, and sports will be prohibited.
Park-goers will also be highly encouraged — although not required — to wear face masks and practice social distancing while at the park. (Here’s a good reminder of why you should do both).
To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, Gov. Murphy declared a statewide stay-at-home order back on March 21. State and county parks were then closed on April 7. This past week, Mayor Fulop reopened five Jersey City parks including Enos Jones Park and Berry Lane Park. More parks are expected to open in the coming days.
