Emma’s Journal Square — sister restaurant to Latham House — is now open. The restaurant has taken over the former PJ Ryan’s space at 4 PATH Plaza.
Whereas Latham House is run by Kris Yettra and Dan Latham, Emma’s Journal Square will be operated by their daughter, Emma. They describe Emma’s as “a little more casual and a little more spunky.” The restaurant will feature local food grown by Emma and her coworkers at City Green as well as a menu packed with comfort food and sandwiches.
Emma’s has an online menu (PDF), but keep in mind it may be tweaked in the coming days. For now, it includes a mix of starters, salad bowls, sandwiches (served all day), and dinner entrees.
The new restaurant will have some Latham House crossovers, such as the Salmon Grains & Greens and the Latham House Hummus (both which we highly recommend), but there are also a lot of new dishes. New temptations include the Thick-Cut Grilled Cheese sandwich, Emma’s Naughty Nachos, and Papa Shermy’s Braised Short Ribs. The Fried Chicken Supper (with debuted as a special at Latham) also appears to be a staple on Emma’s JSQ menu.
There are also a few cocktails-to-go options including a rum-based punch and a Misunderstood Whiskey lemonade iced tea.
Emma’s Journal Square — save room for dessert
We consider Latham House to be the king of restaurant desserts, so we have high expectations for Emma’s. Currently, their dessert menu includes the Kooky Monster Ice Cream sandwich and the Real Deal Key Lime Pie. You’ll also be able to order a few Latham House favorites like challah chocolate chip bread pudding. Just like Latham House, most of the desserts at Emma’s are accompanied by Torico’s ice cream.
As far as delivery goes, Emma’s JSQ says you can find them on UberEats. However, their Instagram notes you’ll find them under the name “PJ Ryan’s.” You can also check out their website www.emmasjc.com/supper for further details. (They should be expanding to other delivery platforms soon).
Emma’s joins an already great line up of bars, cafes, and restaurants in the Journal Square area that includes the likes of Whealth Cafe, JSQ Lounge, 15 Fox Place, and Ling Long Xuan.
hopefully their daughter Emma will care more about customer concerns than the owners of Latham House. If you have a minute to kill, look through the reviews of Latham house on yelp and google and you’ll see aggressive, retaliatory responses to reviews from customers who complain about the service.
