John’s Pizza is closing its Jersey City restaurant effective immediately. Located at 87 Sussex Street, the neighborhood pizzeria spent nearly 14 years serving the Jersey City community.

“We regret to inform you we have closed our Jersey City location,” reads their website. “We want to thank our valued customers who became family for all of your continued support during our near 14 years of business.”

The first John’s Pizza was established in 1997 in New York’s Time Square neighborhood. (260 West 44th to be exact). It was located in a former 19th-century church. At the time, it was considered the country’s largest pizzeria offering thin-crust brick oven pizza.

Back in 2008, John’s Pizza crossed the Hudson and opened its first New Jersey location in Jersey City’s Paulus Hook neighborhood. The JC restaurant offered John’s classic brick oven pies as well as various lunch options, cocktail/wine specials, and desserts.

Unfortunately, the ongoing pandemic continues to hit small businesses — especially restaurants — particularly hard. In the past two years, Jersey City has lost dozens of eateries including Square 1 Eatery and Two Crepes, to name just a few.
