There’s plenty of talk about women in tech these days, but a new study by personal finance company SmartAssest shows which cities are actually providing equal opportunities for women seeking careers in tech.
Cracking the top half of the list is our very own Jersey City, which comes in at number 21 on the list. That’s four points higher than its 2018 ranking and a 13-point jump from its 2017 ranking.
For its study, SmartAsset looked at data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. In particular, it looked at data for cities with a population of 200,000 or more. Each of the 58 cities were then ranked on four factors: gender pay gap in the tech industry, income after housing costs, percent of women who make up the tech workforce, and the percent change in tech jobs from 2014 to 2017.
In Jersey City, women in tech industry earn 90 percent of what their male counterparts earn. This beats neighboring New York where they earn 86 percent of what their male coworkers make. (According to Census Bureau data, women in tech generally earn 84% of what men do). Moreover, 20 percent of the tech jobs in Jersey City are filled by women.
At the top of SmartAsset’s list is Washington, D.C., where 39 percent of the city’s tech workforce are women. In D.C. women earn 95 percent of what men in tech are paid. Rounding out the top five cities are Baltimore, MD; Philadelphia, PA; Houston, TX; and Arlington, VA.
