If last weekend’s NYRR Newport 5K felt too simple, city officials are currently planing a Jersey City Marathon for next year. The 26.2-mile race will take place on Sunday, April 23, 2023.
“We are looking to cover maybe three, maybe four wards of the city, then it will be two loops,” Jersey City Road Runners Executive Director Steve Lipski told NJ.com. “The first loop would be 13.1 (miles), the second would be very similar, not necessarily identical but almost identical to the first.”
A half marathon (13.1 miles) will also take place on the same day. Runners participating in the half marathon will end after the first loop, whereas those running the full marathon will continue and run a second loop to hit the full 26.2 miles.
A professional course designer has been enlisted to help devlop the course. Race organizers hope the marathon can somehow include parts of Liberty State Park.
The Jersey City Marathon will be run entirely in Jersey City and it’ll allow participants to qualify for 2024’s Boston Marathon. The race will also be a USA Track & Field New Jersey certified event.
Full details on the first Jersey City Marathon will be ironed out in the months to come. In the meantime, you can sign up for updates on the Jersey City Road Runners website.
