Mark your calendars! Restaurants in Jersey City are set to reopen for outdoor dining starting Monday, June 15. To help small businesses recover from the economic lockdown caused by COVID-19, city officials are expanding the Jersey City Pedestrian Plaza. The extra space will allow restaurants to offer more al fresco dining. This is especially important for restaurants and bars, since indoor dining is still limited.
As part of the city’s plan, the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Mall will now include Columbus to First street, First street between Newark Avenue and Jersey Avenue (pictured above), and Columbus to Grand (only the southbound lane will be closed).

As of Thursday, city officials had already started closing off the new areas with barricades preventing traffic from entering those streets. The closures will last throughout the summer. Officials plan to offer similar “streateries” in other parts of Jersey City, but there are no concrete plans as of yet.
