Jersey City Heights is becoming home to some of our favorite new spots. From Bread and Salt to Riverview Wine — new (as well as existing) restaurants and shops in the Heights have a personal touch that’s becoming harder to find in other parts of the city. (I’m looking at you, downtown). Green Pear Heights continues that tradition.
Green Pear Heights is a super cozy BYOB located at 93 Franklin Street. (Nestled in between Sherman Avenue and Hancock Avenue). The restaurant’s menu offers a mix of European food that ranges from goulash to a variety of pastas. Entrees range from $18 to $20 and the dishes we tried included generous portions for the price. (More importantly, they were also delicious).
Restaurant and Events Space
Owner Isabella Molnar opened the restaurant back in June as a sister restaurant to Hoboken’s Green Pear Cafe. She wants Green Pear Heights to become a neighborhood eatery that can double as a community hub with special events, networking, and performances. (The front of the restaurant has a small nook that can function as a stage). The restaurant recently hosted a women’s networking night.
In terms of the food, the dishes we had were excellent. We started with the Spätzle, a German noodle that’s served with a dollop of cottage cheese and meaty bits of bacon. The noodles are a tad thicker and chewier than your typical Italian noodle, but they tasted great with the saltiness of the bacon.
You probably wouldn’t associate crab cakes with a European restaurant (at least we wouldn’t), but the crab cakes at Green Pear Heights are definitely worth trying. You get two, plump crab patties each with a crisp exterior and warm, meaty inside. They come with potatoes, diced peppers, and a salad. We were also fans of the warm apple pierogi served a la mode with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
As much as we loved the food, the hospitality at Green Pear Heights is what stood out the most. We had an excellent conversation with the owner and noticed that she made the point of chatting with and getting to know other diners at the restaurant. It’s nice to find a spot that’s not trying to churn out diners as fast as possible.
Green Pear Heights’ hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 5:30pm to 9pm.
