Harry’s Daughter Jersey City — First Impression

Harry's Daughter is bringing Caribbean eats to Jersey City

1

What: Harry’s Daughter is a new Caribbean gastro-pub located in Bergen-Lafayette. It soft opened in November and is now open seven days a week. It’s about a $7 Lyft ride from Grove.

Interior: From the palm tree-covered walls to the lounge’s wicker swings, there’s no escaping the restaurant’s laid back, tropical vibe. The softly lit restaurant is spacious and consists of a bar/banquette area, a dining section that overlooks an open kitchen, and an intimate lounge area with swinging lounge chairs.

The Menu: Caribbean food is a fusion of various cuisines and the menu at Harry’s Daughter reflects that perfectly with a mix of items that range from Jerk Chicken to Fried Plantains. Starters range from $8 to $11, entrees from $12 to $24, and sides are all $5. House cocktails ($11 each) include a Black Stalin (the restaurant’s take on the Moscow Mule), Ria’s Rum Punch (which we tried and recommend), and a Dark & Stormy.

We Loved: In a word — everything. The Avocado Crush Toast ($8) comes with a healthy spread of creamy avocado served on a thick cut of crunchy bread with diced tomatoes and shredded red cabbage. You’ll need multiple napkins for the Roti Quesadilla ($12, with Jerk Shrimp +$4), but it’s absolutely delicious with plump, spicy shrimp that are accompanied by a cheddar cheese and pineapple mix. If you like spicy food, make sure to ask for the homemade Scotch Bonnet-based salsa, which gives your food an extra kick of heat. The Bread Pudding was an excellent end to my meal, with a crispy outer crust, moist center, and refreshing dollop of ice cream. Last but not least, if the tropical interior doesn’t seduce you, the music at Harry’s Daughter certainly will. The playlist consists of Caribbean covers of mainstream songs as well as a little Lord Kitchener. Seriously, what’s not to love.

Could Be Better: I was hard pressed to find something I didn’t like about Harry’s Daughter. One thing worth noting is that if you have strict vegan friends, they might be limited to just sides and apps since most main entrees are meat-, seafood-, or cheese-based. We also can’t wait to see more menu and dessert options.

Final Take: Harry’s Daughter is one of the most exciting and fun restaurants I’ve eaten at in a very long time. Staff is very accommodating/friendly, ambiance is great, and the food — delicious. Whether you’re on a date, with friends, or by yourself — it’s a must-visit.
