Fewer Street Cleanings & Ticket Amnesty Proposed for Jersey City

1

Jersey City Council President Rolando Lavarro wants to reduce the city’s street sweeping program from four days a week to just two days a week (each side of the street, once a week).

The proposal is called Project Street and it also includes a “ticket amnesty program” that would pardon parking tickets that were issued before January 1, 2017. Residents that have tickets that were issued after January 1, 2017 would also be able to pay their fines without late fees.

The hope is that the amnesty program would allow the city to collect payment on fees that might have not otherwise been collected.

Project Street would also reform “booting” laws so that cars would run the risk of getting “booted” after 5 outstanding tickets. Other noteworthy parts of the plan include:

  • adding new “boots on the ground” that can clean streets manually
  • creating an online site where residents can look up street sweeping schedules
  • ending the practice of the license suspension for residents with unpaid parking tickets

You can voice your thoughts on the proposal via the Project Street website.

  1. i am concerned that changing street cleaning means fewer spaces because cars will not move. There will be cuts in “boots” You cant make a promise like that. Also, people are used to sweeping rubbish into the streets. Streets will just be dirtier.
