Exchange Place may soon get its own Pedestrian Plaza. City officials are looking to build a pedestrian mall in front of the Katyn monument at Exchange Place, reports NJ.com.
The Exchange Place Pedestrian Plaza would close off the eastern end of Montgomery Street (from Hudson Street to the waterfront). It would also close off a small portion of Columbus Drive at Hudson Street. (Only vehicles entering the Hyatt Hotel would be allowed).
- Where to eat outdoors: Jersey City outdoor dining
- Now open at 90 Hudson: Sweetgreen Jersey City
The space would be used for sidewalk cafes and outdoor dining. It would also include some play areas for kids and more green space for the waterfront. Funding for the project would come from the Exchange Place Alliance Special Improvement District. The first Jersey City Pedestrian Plaza debuted back in 2015 stretching from Grove to Erie. (It was later expanded to Jersey Avenue).
Current eateries that could take advantage of the new space include Starbucks, Gregory’s Coffee, Potbelly Sandwich Shop, Dunkin’ Donuts, Subway, and Sweetgreen Jersey City.
Ward E Councilman James Solomon tells NJ.com that there needs to be more public input prior to any changes being made to the area.
