The Exchange Place PATH station will shut down this weekend as the Port Authority begins work on the station’s damaged escalators. The shutdown will begin Friday, October 23, at 10pm and last through Monday, October 26 at 5am.
The station will also close during the weekends of November 20 through November 23 and December 4 through December 7. The weekend closures are necessary as the PA replaces the station’s three escalators, which were damaged during Superstorm Sandy.

Each of the three existing escalators must be dismantled and removed before new escalators are installed, states the PA in a press release. The installation of each escalator is expected to take about seven months. Currently, the PA envisions this project lasting through the second half of 2022! (Here’s hoping the work can be expedited like the repairs along the WTC tunnel).
The PA will provide free shuttle bus service “around the clock” to the Newport and Grove Street stations while the station is closed. The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system will also cross-honor PATH riders during the weekend closures. (Just keep in mind that the Light Rail doesn’t operate 24/7).
Escalator replacement work is also taking place at the Newport PATH station. (This station, however, will remain open during the work). Two of the four escalators at Newport will be out of service through the winter of 2022. One up and one down escalator will remain in service during this time, tweeted the agency.
