Turns out that Third & Vine isn’t the only downtown business closing its doors. Downtown Hardware will close by year’s end.
Located at 152 Newark Avenue (opposite South House), the family-run hardware store has served downtown Jersey City for over 45 years.
Edwin Cruz — whose father originally ran the store — tells us that competition from the likes of Home Depot and Amazon have hit Downtown Hardware harder than expected. As a result, the business is no longer financially viable.
Although there is no set date for the closing, Cruz says that the store could close as early as December. (Cruz and his family own the property, so they’re speaking with potential renters at the moment).
Downtown Hardware is the latest family-owned store to close along the Pedestrian Plaza. Earlier this year, Golden Dry Cleaners closed, and in 2018 Tendershoot Farms closed to make way for Oliva.
This is such sad news. A main-stay go-to-place since moving here over 30 years ago.
Agree, I remember swinging by the store with my parents when I was a kid. Would always get my keys copied there as well. Sad to see them go.
Too sad. They’re always my first choice , and I’d rather see if they’ll order something for me than go to Home Depot.
Sad to see them go, but I’m sure they’ll actually make a killing renting the property out given how much DTJC values have skyrocketed. I would guess they’ll actually be better off.
Thank you Downtown Hardware for the many years of serving the community. Your store was a lifesaver for me with no car!
Good luck.
