Quarantine life just got a little easier. On Friday, Governor Phil Murphy signed an executive order permitting restaurants and bars to sell cocktails to go during the COVID-19 state of emergency. Although a few restaurants had been offering cocktails to go for awhile — they were doing so at their own risk.
Behind the push to legalize cocktail delivery was Jersey City’s own Cellar 335. The tiki bar/restaurant initiated the push to legalize cocktails to go with a petition it started earlier this month. Under the new law — which is already in effect — bars, restaurants, and distilleries can “sell and deliver alcoholic beverages in original containers or in closed and sealed containers and mixed cocktails in closed and sealed containers” for consumption off the premises.

“New Jersey’s restaurant and hospitality industry, like so many other businesses, has suffered tremendous financial losses due to COVID-19,” said Governor Murphy via press release. “Allowing business owners with certain licenses and permits to sell beverages directly to consumers is a creative way to alleviate some of their financial uncertainty.”
Here in Jersey City numerous restaurants/bars are now offering cocktails to go including The Boil (pictured), Harry’s Daughter, Würstbar, Cellar 335, White Star, and Greene Hook, to name a few.
