Cafe Peanut is a new eatery that bills itself as a “funky little place” dedicated to quality. The new cafe brings coffee, tea, and healthy eats to the neighborhood. It joins the likes of Jollibee, Jersey City Night Market, and Wendy’s to Journal Square’s every growing food scene.
The recently opened cafe is located at 586 Newark Avenue (across the street from the William J Brennan courthouse). Alongside Kobrick coffee, Rishi tea, and Boylan sodas, Cafe Peanut also serves sandwiches, salads, and a variety of homemade pastries. There are also cold brews, nitro coffee, and plenty of specialty drinks.
The owner is exceptionally friendly and personable, eager to answer any questions you may have about Cafe Peanut’s menu. He also designed the cafe, which has a retro cool feel that’s equal parts casual and cozy.
In terms of pricing, espresso drinks range from $3 to $5.50, specialty drinks are $4 to $7, and drip/cold brew/nitro beverages are all under $4. Sandwiches, wraps, and salads are in the $10 to $14 range with breakfast items (bagels, egg sandwiches, and yogurt) in the $2 to $8 range.
Cafe Peanut will also offer a unique drink called cascara. It’s made using the “skin” of the coffee cherry fruit. (Coffee beans are the seed of the coffee cherry). Cascara is neither coffee nor tea, but has a sweet, fruity profile with notes of hibiscus, cherry, and sometimes mango. Cafe Peanut will offer cascara on tap in the coming days.
The cafe also has a back dining table, which could double as a space for dinners down the line. (The owner is open to the idea, but nothing is set in stone. Currently, it’s extra seating for customers).
Cafe Peanut is open 7 days a week from 7am to 7pm and from 9am to 5pm on weekends. You can check out their menu below or follow them on Instagram.
