What: Newly opened Cafe Alyce is high on our list of spots offering the best brunch in Jersey City. The BYOB restaurant is located in what was formerly the Medical Center Luncheonette across the street from The Beacon. Before being redeveloped into luxury rentals, The Beacon was the original home of the Jersey City Medical Center (JCMC) and the Medical Center Luncheonette (now Cafe Alyce) served many of the hospital’s staff. The Medical Center Luncheonette eventually closed until Tory Aunspach — of Bergen Lafayette’s Hooked JC — stepped in. Aunspach, who is also responsible for reviving the JSQ Lounge, has revamped the former diner into Cafe Alyce offering hearty, made-from-scratch meals in a casual atmosphere.
Interior: I never visited the original Medical Center Luncheonette so I can’t comment on how much it’s changed. However, the new space is very inviting with a low-key, come as you are vibe. That said, you won’t find any dated red-vinyl cushion seats here. Instead you’ll see exposed brick walls, large windows that look onto Montgomery, and an L-shaped counter with metal stools for solo dining. Above the entrance you’ll also find what appears to be the original Medical Center Luncheonette’s signage.
What We Loved: The staff at Cafe Alyce are among the most friendly and helpful staff you’ll find in all of Jersey City. They were able to make menu recommendations without skipping a beat and they kept checking in on us long after our meals arrived. As for the food, it’s as delicious as home cooking gets. Like many of Aunspach’s eateries, Cafe Alyce places a special emphasis on made-from-scratch meals with fresh ingredients you can actually see and taste. I loved the “Country Boy,” which includes three eggs, house-made hashbrown, a small side of Delta Grind grits, and your choice of bread (get the biscuit). It also comes with your choice of thick-cut bacon, house-made sausage, or mushrooms.
As someone born in New York City, I don’t consider myself a grits expert. However, the grits at Cafe Alyce are buttery, creamy perfection with a wonderfully gritty texture. They’re not runny nor are they doused in butter, like other grits I’ve tried. The homemade biscuit is another winner, with a crisp exterior and moist, soft interior. Paired with their house-made raspberry jam, you’ll be tempted to eat just a basket of biscuits and jam. Meanwhile, the hashbrown was perfectly golden, crisp, and crunchy. It’s a hearty meal and an amazing value at just $16. The Shrimp & Grits was another winning dish with three plump, wild-caught shrimp served over creamy Delta Grind grits. It also includes two poached eggs and your choice of bread. Served on a sizzling skillet, it puts every other shrimp and grits dish I’ve ever had to shame.
Could Be Better: Cafe Alyce is only serving breakfast and lunch at the moment. I’d love to see them offer dinner with extended hours.
Final Take: Cafe Alyce is an amazing addition not just to the Bergen Hill neighborhood, but to all of Jersey City. It’s fun, the food is excellent, the staff is friendly, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Put them at the very top of your must-try list.
