Brick Lane Jersey CityBrick Lane Curry House is a London-style Indian restaurant open at 136 Newark Avenue along the Jersey City Pedestrian Plaza. (They have taken over the former Pasta e Vino space).

London’s “curry houses” are much spicier than your typical U.S. Indian restaurant. As the New York Times points out, British curry houses are known for offering curries with varying degrees of heat, from a mild tikka masala to an infernal phaal.

That’s where Brick Lane comes into the picture. The restaurant is operated by Ajit Bains and Satinder Sharma. The duo have two locations in New York and one in Montclair, NJ. This is their first Brick Lane in Jersey City.

In terms of food, the NYT liked Brick Lane’s chicken tikka masala, which is served with a creamy tomato sauce that’s amped up by dried fenugreek leaves. For something on the hotter side, they recommend the “intense vindaloo,” which they described as delivering a “torrid punch” while keeping the sweat factor at a manageable level.

For those who prefer really hot curry, Brick Lane Jersey City offers their infamous phaal. The dish is described as “an excruciatingly hot curry, more pain and sweat than flavor!” Diners who are able to finish this dish will get a bottle of beer on the house and your picture on their (P)hall of fame.

Brick Lane Jersey City — cocktails
Brick Lane JC Cheeky Bandar
Cheeky Bandar

In addition to the excellent food, we’ve become huge fans of the cocktails offered at Brick Lane Jersey City. All of the cocktails offer a nice balance of flavors, but we’re especially big fans of the “Cheeky Bandar.” It’s made with bourbon, limoncello, apricot jam, and sage leaf.

The “Nirvana” is another excellent drink. Made with India’s award-winning Paul John whisky, the smoked cocktail is filled with a rich, musky flavor that pairs well with many of Brick Lane’s dishes.
