Jersey City isn’t known for its Brazilian food, but that’s about to change thanks to Tamborim. The new Brazilian restaurant, the latest venture by Michael Casalinho of Broa Cafe, is now open at 130 Newark Avenue.
Casalinho is of Portuguese descent, but he started experimenting with Brazilian food at Broa late last year. On select Mondays, Casalinho would host a “Favela do Portuga” at Broa. The purpose of the pop-up was to highlight the food of Brazil.
- Now open: La Brujeria
- Coming soon: Efes Grill
When Atlas closed earlier this year, Casalinho jumped on the opportunity to take it over. (While simultaneously working on the opening of nearby Eira). Main dishes at Tamborim Jersey City include the feijoada ($32), which is Brazil’s national dish. The black bean stew is made with dried and cured meats, pig’s feet/ear/tail, pork belly, white rice, and sauteed collard greens. Seafood lovers will want to try the moqueca de peixe ($28) — a fish stew with monkfish, shrimp, coconut milk, dende oil, yuca flour, and coconut rice. (You can check out the full menu here).
There’s also a variety of Brazilian-inspired cocktails like the Bahia (cachaça, banana, Brazil nut molasses, grapefruit, lemon, walnut bitters), Caipirinha (cachaça, lime, sugar), and the Rainha Jundiai (Pisco, Brazilian gin, lemon, passionfruit, açai falernum).
Tamborim Jersey City is currently open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 4:30pm to 10pm. The back part of the restaurant (along with the upper floor) remain closed. However, you can opt for dine-in or takeout.
Tamborim outdoor dining
Tamborim recently added Jersey City outdoor dining along the sidewalk. Seating is available weekdays and usually expanded on the weekends (weather permitting).
