Bobwhite Counter is now open in Jersey City. We can’t imagine what it’s like to open a restaurant right now, but we’re happy they’re here.
Given the circumstances, Bobwhite will open with a limited menu for pickup or delivery only. You can order by phone or via their app (iOS/Android). Just keep in mind, app orders are pickup only right now.
If you’re not familiar with the name, Bobwhite Counter is a New York-based eatery that specializes in fried chicken. According to the New York Times, the skin is “dark bronze and nubbly, studded with tiny crispy kernels.”
The secret is in how owner Keedick Coulter preps his birds. Coulter brines his grass-fed birds in sweet tea — a Southern drink that’s more sugar than it is tea — and then rolls them in milk, flour, salt, pepper, and a mix of spices. They’re then thrown into the pressure fryer and served crispy and juicy.
Fried chicken isn’t the only dish at Bobwhite Counter. The menu includes other Southern classics like a fried catfish sandwich, fried chicken sandwich, and a pimento cheese sandwich. You can also order a vegetarian Mac & Cheese plate or Farmhouse Salad. But let’s face it — you’re coming here for the chicken and not the house salad. In terms of pricing, everything on the menu is priced well under $15.
