Best Veggie Burgers in Jersey City

5

There are a lot of veggie burgers out there. Many lack flavor while others are tasty enough to satisfy even your meat-eating friends. In an effort to separate the tasteless hockey pucks from the flavor-packed patties that actually taste of grains and veggies, we’re creating a list of our favorite veggie burgers.

This isn’t a list of every veggie burger in JC. Admittedly, there are still a few we’d like to try. In the meantime, these are the veggie burgers we’ve tried, love, and wholeheartedly recommend.

Tea NJ
Black Bean Sandwich ($8)
This small, family-owned cafe specializes in vegan eats, so it’s no surprise its Black Bean Veggie Sandwich scores high on our list. Texture-wise, the patty is one of our favorites — soft and tender with bits of crunch and chew. It holds up really well and doesn’t turn into a mush of goo after your first bite. You can get it as a sandwich or burger.

Left Bank Burger
Garden State ($10)
Left Bank’s veggie burger comes courtesy of Jersey City Veggie Burgers. The thick, black bean-based pattie is an excellent pick for meat eaters venturing into the meatless world because it’s topped with spicy aioli and generous amounts of pepper jack cheese for a burger that offers more bite than your typical veggie pattie. You can also BYO veggie burger and ditch the fries for a side of veggies.

Dolma
Quinoa Veggie Burger ($16)
Not all veggie burgers are made with black beans — Dolma’s veggie burger uses quinoa and chickpeas as its base. The plump, tender burger is topped with roasted red peppers, nigella seeds, and tahini sauce, which gives it an overall Middle Eastern flare. The burger has a beautiful crust and the quinoa gives it a nice crunch throughout. It’s one of the pricier burgers on our list, but it also packs plenty of flavor.

Halifax
Quinoa Veggie Burger ($14)
Though not in Jersey City, Halifax’s veggie burger is worth a trip to the Mile Square City. The generously sized patty is a blend of black quinoa, black beans, carrots, housemade barbecue sauce, and garlic confit. It’s all bound with Rice Krispies, which is used to create a gluten free veggie burger (when served sans bread). The Rice Krispies also gives the veggie burger a slight sweetness to it. Crusty on the outside and tender on the inside, the burger is topped with balsamic aioli and paired with potato wedges that are dusted with paprika.

  1. You have to try The Hamilton Inn’s Robert Plant veggie burger…it tastes like the real thing, it doesn’t fall apart like mushy black bean burgers, and is not coated with any kind of crust. The only sort of negative thing is it has goat cheese on it, which is not bad, but I put it in my side salad, where I felt it belonged. The burger was also topped with onions. It cost $17, but the price includes the afore-mentioned side salad or fries. Bonus…the name of the burger is totally cool!

    • Awesome, thanks for the rec! Intrigued by the “plant-based” aspect of it and yeah, that’s gotta be the coolest name ever for a veggie burger, haha.
