Move over, Comcast. Hudson County residents have a new Internet Service Provider to choose from. Starry Internet is bringing its $50/month Internet plan to Jersey City, Hoboken, Union City, Weehawken, and West New York.
Launched in 2016 by Aereo founder Chet Kanojia, the Boston-based startup offers one 200Mbps plan for $50/month.
Unlike traditional broadband providers that have to dig up streets to install physical lines, Starry installs antennas called Starry Beams on towers and building rooftops.
The antennas beam Starry’s signal to a box called the Starry Point, which is installed by Starry in multi-unit buildings. The Starry Point then beams the signal one more time to your Starry Wing (router), which broadcasts the signal throughout your home. (CNET has a nitty-gritty look a how it all works along with the pros and cons).
For residents living in public or affordable housing, Starry also offers its Starry Connect plan, which costs $15/month. You can check to see if Starry is available in your neighborhood via their website.
Starry arrives in Jersey City just as Comcast announces price hikes for its customers. The price increases come ahead of the launch of Comcast’s new streaming service, Peacock, due later this July.
Starry is also available in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC.
